Norman G Thomson
Has a BSC (Hons) Degree in Biochemistry and a Post Graduate Degree in Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Management. He is also a qualified teacher, with a City and Guilds qualification in adult teaching, and an NVQ Assessor. Norman has over 25 years of experience in the oil and gas and energy sector, both in the UK and overseas. He worked for BP offshore as a safety officer, and then joined a consultancy company where he managed a wide range of national and international projects, including work in Brunei, Egypt, South Africa, Philippines and in several European countries. His main activities in relation to HSE have included auditing, training, management system design, emergency response and incident investigation.
After working in consultancy, Norman joined Halliburton and KBR as an HSE Manager, with responsibility for projects with Shell, Chevron Texaco and Nexen. He has a very keen interest in behavioural safety and has implemented several task/behavioural-based safety programmes for companies within the oil and gas sector and has presented a number of papers at HSE conferences on the subject of behavioural safety.
Norman took 18 months out from the oil and gas industry recently and worked as a European HSE Manager for a major food company, where he was responsible for implementing 14001 and 18001 systems at factories in France, Germany, Spain, Poland and Russia. In 2005, Norman returned to the energy sector and worked as a Principal Consultant for DNV in Aberdeen. He undertook several major HSE audits of companies in Venezuela, Russia and Norway.
In addition to his consultancy work, Norman has written several books on HSE-related topics and has published many articles on risk management, behaviours at work and risk perception.
